Walking Holidays in the Picos de Europa, the Relaxed Way
The Picos de Europa are among Europe's most dramatic mountains, and you do not have to be a hardened trekker to enjoy them. From a comfortable base in the Cabuérniga valley you can day-trip to their fringes and viewpoints, then come home to a proper dinner — no camping, no forced march.
How far are the Picos from Casa Agara?
Honestly? A day-trip, not a hop. Reckon on 45 minutes to just over an hour to Potes, the gateway town, and around an hour and three-quarters to two hours to Fuente Dé. We would rather tell you straight than have you disappointed by a "just an hour to the mountains" line.
Does the cable car take me to the top?
It takes you high — to 1,823 m at the El Cable viewpoint, a spectacular ride — but not to the true summits, which are serious mountaineering territory. From the top station, gentle trails like the walk to the Áliva pastures open up for non-climbers.
Can I walk in the Picos if I'm not super-fit?
Yes — the beauty of day-tripping is that you choose easy valley and viewpoint walks rather than committing to a hut-to-hut expedition. The scenery is just as vast whether you climb it or admire it.
Is it worth a day of the week?
Absolutely — it is one of the great sights of northern Spain. Just treat it as the day-out it is, and check the cable car is running before you set off (it closes for high wind).
