Holidays for widows in the UK: finding companionship and new experiences after loss

The empty chair at the travel agent's desk

Someone asked us last spring whether Casa Agara was "one of those singles holidays." It isn't, and we said so. But we understood the question underneath it: is there a place where I can go on my own, without being made to feel like a project or a punchline?

Widowhood does something particular to travel plans. The trips you used to take were built for two. The friends who once said "let's go somewhere" have, for one reason or another, stopped asking. And the one thing every brochure seems to charge you extra for, simply because you're now booking a single room, feels like a second bill for the same loss.

The single supplement is the real barrier, not fear

It isn't nerves that keep most women over 50 at home. In a JourneyWoman survey of women over 50 (a self-selected panel, so a useful signal rather than a national figure), 78% named the single supplement, not safety and not cost overall, as the biggest single barrier to travelling alone. That statistic matches what we hear at the door of the casona most weeks: people who would have come years ago if the maths hadn't punished them for arriving unaccompanied.

At Casa Agara there is no forced single supplement. You twin-share at no extra charge, matched with someone of the same sex, or you pay a modest supplement for a room entirely your own. Nobody is quietly moved to a smaller room or a worse view because they turned up alone. We've run hosted weeks here since 2023 and this one policy, more than any view of the Saja-Besaya reserve, is what people write to thank us for.

What actually happens at the table

Every meal is included: breakfast, a light lunch (a picnic if the day's plan is a walk), and dinner cooked by Rob, not catered by anyone else. On a real week here that has meant tapas and cava round the fire, then roasted salmon; courgette soup spiced with Ethiopian berbere, then duck confit; a curry night with three choices and homemade lime pickle; Tudanca beef, a local breed, on another. This is not half board. Lunch is included, every day, and the only lunch you pay for is one you choose to have in a restaurant instead.

And the bar is free. House wine, beer and spirits are poured all day, help yourself, with only the premium brands carrying a small charge. That sits alongside no forced single supplement as the two things we'd want anyone to know before anything else. It is not all-inclusive, we should say that plainly: flights, insurance and any restaurant lunch are extra. But at the table itself, nobody is counting glasses or splitting a bill, and that changes the mood of an evening more than people expect.

Company without pressure

We are not a grief retreat and we don't pretend to be. There's no counsellor on staff, no structured sharing circle, and if that's what you need, look elsewhere first. What we offer instead is simpler: a full table each evening, a walk you can join or sit out, and Chispa the dog leaning against your leg whether you feel like talking or not. Nobody here asks why you're travelling alone. Most of the guests around that table are doing something similar, for their own reasons, and the conversation moves on to the walk, the wine, or Rob's cooking soon enough.

Our piece on the best holidays for widows over 50 in the UK goes further into what actually helps versus what merely sounds nice on a leaflet, and it's worth reading before you book anywhere, including here.

A caveat worth saying out loud

This is a working house in a real valley, an hour from Santander airport, inside the Saja-Besaya reserve. It rains in Cantabria. The walks have genuine ascent, and the minibus takes time to move a group between villages. If you want total solitude, this isn't it; if you want a fortnight of guaranteed sunshine, we can't promise that either. What we can promise is a place set for you at dinner, whether you arrived that afternoon or a week ago.

FAQ

Is Casa Agara a grief retreat for widows?

No. There's no counsellor and no structured programme for processing loss. What there is, is a hosted week with shared meals, gentle walking, and no pressure to explain yourself, which many widowed guests find is exactly the company they were missing rather than therapy they were seeking.

Will I be the only person travelling alone?

Unlikely. Solo travel in the UK is at its highest level this decade, with 19% of UK holidaymakers taking a solo trip in the past year according to ABTA's Holiday Habits 2025-26 survey. Most hosted weeks at Casa Agara include a mix of solo guests, couples and friends travelling together.

Do I have to pay extra for travelling alone?

No. There's no forced single supplement: you twin-share at no extra cost, matched with someone of the same sex, or you can pay a supplement for a private room if you'd rather have one. That policy applies to every hosted week, not just certain ones.

What's actually included in the price, and what isn't?

Breakfast, a light lunch and a home-cooked dinner every day, plus a free bar of house wine, beer and spirits, are all included. Flights, travel insurance, any restaurant lunch and premium spirits are not. It's genuinely not half board and genuinely not all-inclusive, and we'd rather be clear about that than oversell it.

How hard is the walking, if I'm not very fit?

Routes vary considerably, from a flat 4.3 km circuit at Playa de Valdearenas to an 8.5 km hill loop near Bárcena Mayor with 650 m of ascent. You choose your own day, and nobody's required to walk at all. Our guide to what suits a solo traveller breaks down which week fits which pace of person.
