Imagine stepping off the plane in Santander, perhaps a little tired from the journey, but with no need to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads or finding a taxi. Instead, a friendly face is there to greet you, ready to whisk you away to an 18th-century casona located in the green heart of Cantabria. This is how a Spice Escapes holiday to Casa Agara often begins. But what exactly does that week entail once you arrive?

A Spice Escapes holiday at Casa Agara includes transfers from Santander airport, hosted half board (breakfast and home-cooked dinner with house drinks), and the flexibility of twin-share accommodation without a forced single supplement. It is a fully hosted experience, ensuring comfort and connection in Green Spain.

More than just a place to sleep

The main sitting room, spacious and warm Unlike simply booking a room, a Spice Escapes week at Casa Agara means you are a guest in our home. From the moment we collect you at Santander airport in one of our vans, the intention is to make your stay as comfortable and effortless as possible. This means airport transfers are included, taking away the stress of arrival and departure logistics. Our home, an 18th-century casona in Fresneda de Cabuérniga, becomes your base for the week, allowing you to settle in and truly relax.

Food and drink: half board and local flavours

Cantabrian cooking served at the casona Good food is central to any enjoyable holiday, and we take pride in what we offer. Every Spice Escapes week here includes half board: a substantial breakfast each morning to set you up for the day, and a delicious, home-cooked dinner each evening. María, with her deep knowledge of local ingredients and traditional recipes, prepares these meals. We make good use of the vegetables from our own garden whenever possible, ensuring freshness and flavour. House drinks are also included with dinner, so you can enjoy a glass of wine or a local beer without thinking about an extra bill. Lunch is generally a more informal affair, often a picnic we prepare or something enjoyed while out exploring.

Accommodation: solo travellers welcome

Casa Agara from the air: stone tower, balconies and terrace One of the most common questions we receive is about accommodation, particularly for those travelling alone. We believe that solo travellers should not be penalised for coming by themselves. That is why a key feature of our Spice Escapes holidays is that there is no forced single supplement. You can choose to twin-share with a fellow guest of the same sex at no extra charge. If, for any reason, a suitable match cannot be found, we cover the supplement ourselves. For those who prefer a room of their own, this is available as an optional paid supplement.

Our house has 12 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, accommodating up to 24 guests per week. We find this size allows for a convivial atmosphere without feeling crowded.

What is not included?

While we strive to make your holiday as inclusive as possible, it is important to be clear about what is not part of the package. Flights to and from Santander are not included, though the Spice Escapes booking site (book.agara.es) does offer options for arranging these. Personal spending money for souvenirs, snacks, or any meals taken outside the casona (such as lunch on an excursion) would also be extra. While we offer a range of activities, specific entry fees for certain attractions, or specialised equipment hire, might not always be covered, depending on the particular week's itinerary. For example, a Cantabrian Walking Week will focus on guided walks, but a specific museum entrance might be an additional cost.

The experience: hosted, not just housed

Ultimately, what is included in a Spice Escapes holiday at Casa Agara goes beyond mere services. It is about a hosted experience. Rob and María, along with Chispa the dog, live on site and are always on hand to help, share local knowledge, and ensure you feel truly at home. We believe in providing a space where genuine connections can form, whether that is with us, your fellow guests, or the appealing natural surroundings of the Saja-Besaya reserve. This is not a self-catering villa or a large, anonymous hotel; it is a place to slow down, connect, and experience Green Spain in a unique way. We have been hosting weeks here since 2023, and each group brings its own unique dynamic.
