How to make friends on a solo walking holiday in northern Spain

The problem nobody tells you about

You book the flight, pack the boots, and then realise the hard part isn't the walking. It's the evenings. Nineteen per cent of UK holidaymakers took a solo holiday in the last twelve months, the highest level this decade and up two percentage points on the year before, according to ABTA's Holiday Habits 2025-26 survey. That's a lot of people standing alone at a bar wondering what to do with themselves between six and eight in the evening.

A solo walking holiday in northern Spain solves the daytime easily enough. Green hills, quiet paths, nobody rushing you. The friendships come later, and they come from structure, not luck.

Why the table matters more than the trail

At Casa Agara, an 18th-century stone casona in Fresneda de Cabuérniga, inside the Saja-Besaya reserve, every meal is included: breakfast, a light lunch (carried as a picnic on walking days), and a home-cooked dinner from the house's own garden. This is not half board, and it is not all-inclusive either, lunch out at a local restaurant is the only meal you'd ever pay for. But the detail that matters for companionship is simpler: there is one table, most nights, for up to 24 guests, and the bar is free. House wine, beer and spirits, poured all day, on the house. Nobody is nursing a single glass of Rioja because the second one costs £6. That changes a room.

Dinner on a real week here has run from tapas and cava round the fire to roasted salmon, then a berbere-spiced courgette soup followed by duck confit, a curry night, seared tuna, a Cantabrian mountain stew of pork and butter beans, Tudanca beef (a local breed), and grilled sardines with slow pork belly. You end up talking about the food before you've said your name. It is, frankly, an easier way into a conversation than anything a walking guide can engineer.

The walking does the rest

A walker on the ridge, the valley below The walks themselves are real, scouted routes, not vague promises: the coastal linear from St Vincent to Playa de Oyambre (7.6 km, 100 m of ascent), the river walk through the Bárcena Mayor valley (8 km out and back, or a 9.3 km circular), and the tougher Bárcena Mayor to Alto de la Guarda circular, 8.5 km with 650 m of climbing, for the days you want your legs to earn dinner.

On the Cantabrian Walking Week, the format is informal by design. Jen and Jim Holgan have led social walking in Scotland for nearly twenty years and have scouted every route here themselves. Rather than leading a group in single file, they simply walk it with you: Jen at a leisurely pace, Jim happy to push on if you want the miles. You choose who you walk beside, and that choice, repeated over five or six days, is where the actual friendships form. Nobody remembers the ascent figures. Everybody remembers who they talked to on the way down.

The single supplement is the real barrier

Casa Agara from the air: stone tower, balconies and terrace Here's the uncomfortable bit most operators skip: 78% of women over 50 name the single supplement, not safety, not cost overall, as the biggest barrier to travelling alone, according to a JourneyWoman survey (a self-selected panel, so read it as indicative rather than a national figure, but the direction is hard to argue with). At Casa Agara there is no forced single supplement. Solo guests twin-share at no extra charge, matched with someone of the same sex, or take a room of their own for a modest supplement if they'd rather. Nobody is quietly overcharged for arriving without a partner. We've written more on what a hosted week in Spain actually costs, item by item, and on why eating alone needn't happen at all.

What this isn't

It isn't a singles holiday, and it isn't a fitness bootcamp dressed up in walking boots. Some days the weather closes in and the picnic gets eaten under a tree instead of on a headland. There's no whole-house hire, and you can't bring your own group and expect the place to yourselves, every week is a shared week, booked person by person. If you want total solitude, this is the wrong address. If you're recently divorced, recently widowed, or simply tired of holidaying alone because your old walking friends stopped travelling, it's worth reading how a hosted week helps you start again.

FAQ

Do I need to be super fit to join the walking week?

No. The routes range from a flat 4.3 km beach circular to an 8.5 km hill walk with 650 m of ascent, and Jen and Jim run at two different paces so you can match your own. You'll need proper boots and full kit, but this is a walking holiday for people who enjoy walking, not an endurance test.

Will I actually meet people, or will I end up alone in a corner?

Meals are taken together, most nights around one table, and the free bar means people linger rather than retreat to their rooms early. With up to 24 guests a week and shared walks each day, the structure does the introducing for you.

Is there a single supplement?

No. Solo guests share a twin room at no extra cost, matched with someone of the same sex, or can pay a supplement for a room of their own. Either way, you're not penalised for travelling alone.

Can I book with a friend rather than coming completely solo?

Yes. Couples and friends join the same hosted weeks as solo guests, everyone eats at the same table regardless. Read more on how friends book onto the same week if you're planning to come as a pair.

What if I don't want to walk every single day?

That's fine. Lunches, the free bar, the garden and the river nearby are there whether or not you've laced up boots that morning, and the minibus transport is included for anyone who'd rather join at a viewpoint than walk the whole route.
