Can four friends book onto the same hosted week? How it works at Casa Agara

The short answer

Yes. Four friends can book onto the same hosted week at Casa Agara, and it is one of the most common ways people arrive here. What we do not offer is a private takeover of the house for just the four of you: there is no whole-house hire, and no bring-your-own-group package. Every week is a scheduled, hosted week for up to 24 guests, booked through Spice Escapes, our exclusive booking partner. Your group of four joins that week alongside other guests, some solo, some couples, some other small groups just like you.

That last point matters more than it sounds. The house works because the table is shared. If four friends took the whole place over, you would get a lovely villa holiday, but you would lose the thing people actually come here for: sitting down each evening with people you did not arrive with, and leaving with a few more numbers in your phone than you came with.

What actually happens when you book

Each of the four of you books a place on the same dated week, the same way any guest does, through Spice Escapes. You tell them you are travelling together and want to be housed as a group. With 12 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms across the casona, there is plenty of scope to keep four friends close: two twin rooms near each other is the usual arrangement, or two of you could take an optional room of your own for a supplement if you would rather not share.

There is no forced single supplement here at all, for anyone, travelling with friends or alone. If two of your four are happy to twin-share, that costs nothing extra. If all four want their own room, that is simply four room supplements, priced clearly at booking. Nobody is quietly charged more for arriving without a partner, which is rarer in this trade than it should be.

Once you land, you are collected. The house runs two vans for airport transfers, and a minibus for getting about during the week, both included in the price. From Santander, that is about an hour's drive into the Saja-Besaya reserve; from Bilbao, closer to ninety minutes.

Meals, the free bar, and why it is not half board

A group dinner at the casona This is where a group of friends notices the value quickest. Every meal is included: a continental breakfast, a light lunch (taken at the house, or carried as a picnic on a walking day), and a home-cooked dinner every night, using vegetables from the house's own garden. Over a real week that has meant tapas and cava round the fire followed by roasted salmon, a courgette soup spiced with Ethiopian berbere before duck confit, a curry night, seared tuna, a Cantabrian mountain stew of pork and butter beans, Tudanca beef (a local breed), and grilled sardines with slow-cooked pork belly. This is not half board. Lunch is included; the only lunch you pay for is one you choose to eat out at a restaurant instead.

And the bar is free. House wine, beer and spirits are poured all day, help yourself, with only premium brands carrying a small charge. For four friends on a week away, that is a genuinely different arithmetic to a normal self-catered cottage, where the bar bill quietly becomes the biggest number on the trip. It is worth saying plainly, though: it is not all-inclusive. Flights, insurance, excursions and a restaurant lunch if you fancy one are all extra.

Walking, riding, or painting, together and separately

A painting group working plein air Groups of four rarely want to do everything as a unit, and that is fine. The valley offers horse riding, walking, the coast, cycling, yoga and painting, and the week's structure leaves room to split off and regroup at dinner. On a walking week, routes such as the Cantabrian Walking Week run from gentle coastal paths to the 650m climb up to the Alto de la Guarda above Bárcena Mayor, so the fitter two of your group can push on while the other two take it steadier. If painting is more your pace, the drawing and painting break with tuition works the same way: side by side at an easel, then together at the table.

If you are still deciding which type of week suits four different personalities, our piece on walking week, painting week or eclipse week is worth a read before you book, and if any of you are nervous about the social side, how to avoid eating alone on a solo holiday explains how the shared table works in practice, whether you arrive as four or as one.

The honest caveat

Aerial view of the Casa Agara estate by the river Saja If what you actually want is the house to yourselves, quiet, private, no strangers at breakfast, Casa Agara is the wrong booking. We do not do exclusive-use weeks. The whole point of a hosted week is other people at the table, and for most groups of friends who come, that turns out to be the best part of the trip they did not plan for.

FAQ

Can we book four rooms together as a group?

Yes. Tell Spice Escapes at the time of booking that you are travelling as a group of four and want to be housed near each other. With 12 bedrooms across the house, this is straightforward on most dates, though it is sensible to book together and early for popular weeks.

Will we be forced to pay a single supplement if two of us don't want to share a room?

No single supplement is ever forced on anyone at Casa Agara. Twin-share costs nothing extra; if any of your four would rather have a room alone, that is an optional paid supplement, priced clearly before you book.

Do we have to do all the activities together as a group?

Not at all. Walking pace, riding, painting and rest days all flex within the week, so your group can split up during the day and come back together for the evening meal, which is where most people say the real bonding happens anyway.

Is it cheaper to book the whole house for just the four of us?

Casa Agara does not offer whole-house hire or a bring-your-own-group rate. Every week is a scheduled hosted week priced per person through Spice Escapes, alongside other guests, and that shared structure is deliberate rather than a limitation to work around.

What isn't included that we should budget for?

Flights, travel insurance, optional excursions and any restaurant lunch you choose over the included light lunch are extra. Everything else, breakfast, lunch, dinner, the free bar and transport during the week, is covered.

If four of you fancy a week like this, the next step is simple: get in touch with us at Casa Agara, and we will point you to Spice Escapes to check dates, room configurations and pricing for your group. Rob, María and Chispa will have the kettle on, and the fire lit, well before you arrive.
