Walking Holidays in Cantabria: the Valley Few Have Found
Cantabria rarely makes the walking brochures, which is exactly why walkers who find it keep coming back. It packs an enormous range into a small, green, Atlantic corner — and Casa Agara sits right in the middle of it, in the Cabuérniga valley.
What kind of walking does Cantabria offer?
Three very different worlds, all within reach. Inland, the Saja-Besaya reserve (24,500 ha) gives you forest and valley trails from 7.5 km loops to 20 km days. On the coast, half an hour away, an easy 11 km cliff path runs along the sea near San Vicente de la Barquera. And the Picos de Europa are about an hour off for a day among their fringes and dramatic viewpoints.
How far are the Picos, really?
Honestly, further than the glossy photos suggest. Reckon on 45 minutes to just over an hour to Potes, the gateway town, and closer to two hours to the Fuente Dé cable car — which rises to 1,823 m, not to the summits themselves. It is a proper day out, not a quick detour, and well worth it.
Is it good for a mix of abilities?
Very. The low-valley routes stay under 600 m and suit gentler legs; the high pastures are for those who want a real climb. On a hosted week you simply pick your day.
When should you come?
Spring and autumn are the pick — green, mild, quiet, with the autumn deer rut a highlight. Tell us your dates and we will match the walking to the season.
