Your First Surf Lesson: What Actually Happens
If the idea of a first surf lesson makes you picture huge waves and wipeouts, relax — a beginners' lesson is gentler, and more fun, than you think. Here is what actually happens.
What does a beginner lesson involve?
You start on the sand: a warm-up, then how to lie, paddle and pop up, practised on a stable foam board before you get wet. Then it is into shallow, waist-high white water — the gentle broken waves, not the big peaks — where the instructor often gives you a push and you try to stand. Most people get to their feet, at least briefly, in the first session.
Is it safe?
Very, in a proper lesson: soft boards, small waves, an instructor beside you, and beaches chosen for gentle conditions. Being a confident swimmer is the main thing you bring.
What should I wear and bring?
Just swimwear and a towel — the school provides the board and wetsuit (you need one even in summer here). A bit of sun cream and a smile.
Will I actually stand up?
Quite possibly on day one, and almost certainly with a couple of goes. Even if you don't, catching a wave lying down is a grin a mile wide.
