You can see the Picos de Europa from the high ground above the house. Touching them takes a day trip, and it is a very good one.

The classic: Fuente De

A little over an hour's drive through the Hermida gorge brings you to Fuente De, where a cable car climbs 750 metres of rock face in about four minutes. At the top: high mountain scenery that belongs in the Alps, walkable in gentle loops or serious ascents depending on your group.

Build the day

  1. Coffee in Potes, the stone-bridge capital of the Liebana valley.
  2. Cable car up; book online in summer and go early.
  3. An hour's amble on the high plateau, or a proper route for the strong walkers.
  4. Long Liebana lunch, then home through the gorge.

The honest notes

Take a warm layer whatever the valley weather says, and have a Potes-and-cheese plan B if cloud sits on the tops. Either way the group dines back at the house that night: no bag-packing, no hotel change.
