The usual walking-holiday compromise is moving hotels every night or driving hours to trailheads. The Saja valley removes both: seven distinct walking days, one base, boots by the same door every morning.

A week that works

  • Day 1: the river path to the old oakwoods of Ucieda. Legs on, no drama.
  • Day 2: Bárcena Mayor through the reserve, lunch in Spain's prettiest mountain village.
  • Day 3: coastal ridges above the beaches at Oyambre, wild horses for company.
  • Day 4: rest-ish day. Santillana del Mar and the Altamira museum.
  • Day 5: the high ground of Saja-Besaya, griffon vultures overhead.
  • Day 6: a Camino del Norte stage along the coast.
  • Day 7: Picos de Europa day trip and the Fuente De cable car.

Grades and group mixing

Most routes have a longer and a shorter version starting together. UK operators who use the house run guided days of six to seven hours and up to ten miles; gentler weeks work just as well.

Everything above is on the doorstep of one whole-house base that sleeps 24.
