What to Pack for a Walking-and-Surf Week in Green Spain
The first thing to understand about packing for Green Spain is that it is green for a reason: this is the Atlantic north, not the baked Mediterranean coast. The weather is mild, changeable and generous with both sunshine and showers — sometimes in the same afternoon. Pack for layers and you will be comfortable whatever the sky does.
For the walking
- Broken-in walking boots or trail shoes — the trails from the door range from gentle valley paths to proper forest hikes.
- Layers you can add and shed — a base layer, a fleece or jumper, and a packable waterproof jacket. The waterproof is not optional here.
- A small daypack, water bottle and sun cream — yes, sun cream; the Atlantic sun is stronger than the temperature suggests.
For the surf and coast
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel. Wetsuits and boards are provided by the local surf schools, so you don't need to lug your own.
- Something to change into on the beach and a pair of flip-flops or sliders.
For the evenings
- Comfortable, relaxed clothes for the long table at dinner — nothing formal; this is a house, not a hotel.
- A warm layer for sitting out in the garden once the sun drops.
The one thing people forget
A light waterproof and a spare pair of socks. Get caught in one Atlantic shower without them and you'll wish you'd read this. Everything else you can improvise — but dry feet make or break a walking day.
