Imagine the sun, a fiery disc, slowly being consumed by the moon until only a shimmering corona remains. This rare celestial event, a total solar eclipse, is set to grace the skies of northern Spain in August 2026. For those who wish to experience this natural wonder from a unique vantage point, while enjoying genuine hospitality and the quiet beauty of Cantabria, Casa Agara is offering a dedicated week.

The Casa Agara solar eclipse week is a hosted holiday specifically timed for the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. Guests stay in our 18th-century casona in Fresneda de Cabuérniga, Cantabria, enjoying half board and guided excursions to suitable viewing locations, alongside other activities in Green Spain.

Witnessing the 2026 eclipse from Green Spain

The total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026 will be a spectacular event, with a narrow path of totality sweeping across Spain. Cantabria, with its clear skies and diverse landscapes, offers excellent opportunities to witness this phenomenon. We have planned our special Solar Eclipse in Northern Spain week to align perfectly with this date, running from 9 to 16 August 2026. This means our guests will be in prime position, away from city lights, to experience the full grandeur of the eclipse.

We will arrange transport to an optimal viewing spot, carefully chosen for its open vistas and minimal light pollution. While the eclipse itself is the main draw, the week is much more than just a single event. It is a chance to connect with nature, enjoy good company, and experience the slow pace of life in a beautiful part of Spain.

What's included in the week?

Like all our hosted weeks, the solar eclipse week at Casa Agara includes half board – a substantial breakfast and a delicious home-cooked dinner each evening. María, with help from our garden, prepares meals using fresh, local ingredients, often featuring vegetables grown right here. House drinks are also included, so you can enjoy a glass of wine or a local beer with your meal without a second thought.

Accommodation is in our comfortable casona, an 18th-century house that retains its original character while offering modern comforts. We are about 1 hour from Santander, making transfers straightforward. Solo travellers are very welcome; we offer twin-share at no extra charge, or you can opt for a room of your own without a forced single supplement. This flexibility is something we believe in, ensuring everyone feels welcome and comfortable.

Beyond the eclipse: exploring Cantabria

While the eclipse is a highlight, the week offers plenty of other activities. Casa Agara is located inside the Saja-Besaya natural reserve, a region known for its lush green valleys, ancient forests, and rugged coastline. We will explore this beautiful environment through a variety of excursions.

Expect guided walks and hikes through the reserve, perhaps along routes like The Hayacorva Route (PR-S 112): into the heart of the Saja beechwood or a visit to Bárcena Mayor: A Walk to One of Spain's Prettiest Villages. The Cantabrian coast is also within easy reach, offering opportunities for coastal walks or even trying a bit of surfing if the conditions are right. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there are opportunities for painting, gentle yoga sessions, or simply reading in our garden with Chispa, the house dog, nearby.

One thing to note is that while Cantabria is often sunny in August, mountain weather can be unpredictable. We always recommend bringing layers and waterproofs, just in case. Also, while we will facilitate travel to the eclipse viewing spot, viewing conditions are, of course, subject to the weather on the day.

A different kind of holiday

Our hosted weeks are designed for those seeking genuine connection and a slower pace. We are not a hotel; we are a home. Rob and María are your hosts, sharing our knowledge of the area and ensuring you feel part of our home for the week. This is a holiday where you are hosted, rather than simply housed, offering a different experience from a typical package holiday or even a solo Airbnb stay. You can read more about this distinction in our article, Is a Hosted Holiday Worth It? Hosted, Not Just Housed.

Every week is booked through Spice Escapes, our exclusive booking partner (ATOL 9046). We do not offer whole-house hire or bring-your-own-group options; each week is a scheduled per-person holiday, fostering a friendly, communal atmosphere among guests.
