How to find walking holidays in Spain for solo travellers without an age restriction

Type "walking holiday Spain solo traveller" into a search engine and you will get two kinds of result: pages aimed at 20-somethings with hostels and bar crawls, or coach tours that quietly cap you at 65 and call it insurance. Neither is what most people mean when they ask the question. What they mean is: I want to walk somewhere green, eat well, and not spend the evening alone in a hotel restaurant reading the wine list twice.

Why age limits creep into the listings

Many operators build age bands into their pricing because their insurance does, or because their coaches are genuinely aimed at retirees. Others go the other way and market almost exclusively to under-40s on booking apps. Very few state plainly that there is no ceiling and no floor, which is odd, because solo travel itself is no longer a niche behaviour. According to ABTA's Holiday Habits 2025-26 survey of 2,001 UK adults, 19% of UK holidaymakers took a solo holiday in the last 12 months, the highest level this decade and up 2 percentage points on the year before. Solo travel is most common among 25-34 year olds at 23%, with 18-24 and 35-44 close behind at 20% each, which tells you the audience spans decades, not one generation. If a walking week in Spain has an age cut-off, that is a decision the operator made for their own convenience, not because solo walkers over 55 or under 30 are somehow the wrong shape for a mountain path.

What to actually search for

Instead of "age restriction", search for the words that actually reveal how a week is run: hosted, twin-share, no single supplement, small group. A genuinely open holiday will say who leads the walks, how many guests join, and what happens if you turn up on your own. It will also tell you what is included beyond the walk itself, because a week that only sorts you a guide and leaves you to fend for dinner is a very different proposition from one that puts you at a shared table every night.

We wrote at more length on this in walking holidays in Spain for singles over 50, and if you're weighing up a walking week against a painting week or something else entirely, this comparison is a fair place to start.

The single supplement trap

Among women over 50, the single supplement is named by 78% as the biggest barrier to travelling alone, ahead of both safety and cost, according to JourneyWoman's Women 50+ Travel survey (a self-selected panel, worth reading as indicative rather than a national figure, but the pattern is consistent with what we hear ourselves). It is the reason we never charge one at Casa Agara. Solo guests share a twin room at no extra cost, matched with someone of the same sex, and if we can't find a match the supplement is on us, not you. If you would rather have your own room regardless, that's a paid option, but it is a choice, never a penalty for arriving alone.

How a hosted Cantabrian week actually works

The group on an active day out in the valley Aerial view of the Casa Agara estate by the river Saja Our Cantabrian Walking Week runs from the house in Fresneda de Cabuérniga, inside the Saja-Besaya reserve, about an hour from Santander. The routes are scouted, not guessed at: from the short, flat loop at Playa de Valdearenas west beach (4.3 km, 25 m of ascent) to the tougher climb up to Alto de la Guarda above Bárcena Mayor (8.5 km, 650 m of ascent), with the river walk along the Senda Flavial del Nansa, part of the Camino Lebaniego, in between. Jen and Jim Holgan, who have led social walking in Scotland for close to twenty years, join you on these routes rather than marching ahead of you. Jen keeps a leisurely pace; if you want to push on, Jim will happily pick it up.

Every meal is included, and that is not the same as half board: breakfast, a light lunch (a picnic if the day's walk calls for one) and a home-cooked dinner every night, from tapas by the fire to a Cantabrian mountain stew of pork and butter beans, using vegetables grown in our own garden. The bar is free all day: house wine, beer and spirits, help yourself, no clock-watching. It genuinely is the loudest thing about the house, and we mention it often because guests tell us it changes the whole feel of the evening; nobody is doing sums about a second glass of wine.

For context, HF Holidays, the UK's largest walking-holiday operator, carried 46,596 guests in 2024. We are a fraction of that size, twelve bedrooms and up to 24 guests a week, and that is deliberate. You eat at one table, not several.

What this holiday is not

Be clear-eyed about it: this is not a fast-paced trekking trip, and it is not all-inclusive. Lunch out at a local restaurant, flights and insurance are your own cost, and Cantabria's weather is genuinely changeable even in late spring, so waterproofs go in the bag whatever the forecast says. If you avoid eating alone as a matter of principle, this piece covers the wider question well.

Is there an age limit to join?

No. Guests have ranged from their thirties to their eighties on hosted weeks here. What matters is a reasonable level of fitness for the walk chosen on the day, not a date of birth.

Do I have to pay a single supplement?

No. Solo guests twin-share at no extra charge, matched with someone of the same sex, or you can pay for a room of your own if you'd rather. There is no penalty for booking as one.

Are the walks too hard for a beginner?

Routes range from a flat 4.3 km beach loop to an 8.5 km hill climb with 650 m of ascent, and you choose which to join each day. Jen and Jim scout every route and walk at a pace that suits the group, not a race pace.

Is this a singles holiday?

Not in the dating sense. It's a hosted week where people who happen to be travelling alone, along with couples and friends, share the same table, the same walks and the same free bar. Most guests come for the company, not the label.
