Getting here: Santander and Bilbao to the Saja valley

The valley feels remote; getting to it is not.

By air

• Santander (SDR): the local airport, about an hour door to door, with UK and European connections.
• Bilbao (BIO): the big northern hub, roughly ninety minutes, with far more routes and timings. Groups flying from several cities often meet here.

By ferry

Direct sailings from the south of England dock in Santander, under an hour from the house. For groups with bikes, easels or a dislike of baggage carousels, this is the luxury option: drive on, sleep, drive off, arrive. More in our no-fly guide.

The last leg

Motorway to Cabezon de la Sal, then fifteen minutes of valley road along the river Saja: meadows, stone villages and the odd unhurried cow. There is ample parking at the house.
