Painters talk about the light in the north of Spain the way surfers talk about swell. Atlantic weather means it changes by the hour: silver mornings, sudden clearings, greens that refuse to stay one colour. For a painting group, that is the whole point.

A week of subjects, all close

  • The valley: hanging meadows, grazing cattle, the Picos on clear days.
  • The villages: Barcena Mayor and Carmona, golden stone and timber balconies made for watercolour.
  • The coast: clifftop panoramas over turquoise coves, working harbours at San Vicente.
  • The house itself: a restored stone casona with gardens running to the river.

When the rain comes

It sometimes does; that is why everything is green. The house has big tables and well-lit rooms for indoor workshops, and the week ends with the group's work hung by the fireplace.

For organisers

Tutors bring groups of ten to twenty-six; the whole estate is yours, with picnic logistics and location suggestions handled locally. Ask about spring and autumn dates, which suit painters best.
