Travelling on your own should never mean eating dinner alone, or being quietly penalised for it. Casa Agara runs hosted weeks in the green Cabuérniga valley of northern Spain where you arrive by yourself and, by the second evening, you are part of a table. A small group, one long dinner every night, and days spent walking, riding or simply slowing down in a wild, forested corner of Green Spain — an hour from Santander.

Is there a single supplement?

No forced one. On the scheduled weeks run with Spice Escapes you can use their twin-share service — they match you with a same-sex room-mate at no extra charge, and if they can't find you a match, they cover any single-room supplement themselves. Prefer a room entirely to yourself? That is available as an optional supplement, clearly priced and never sprung on you. Either way, you are not simply penalised for coming alone.

Will I be the odd one out?

Not here. Everyone on a hosted week has come to meet people, so the awkward first-night feeling passes quickly. Rob and María host in person and make the introductions, and the long table does the rest. Chispa, the house dog, is a great leveller.

What is a hosted week, exactly?

You are looked after, not handed keys to an empty house. Half board is included — breakfast and a proper home-cooked dinner each day, vegetables from the garden — along with the house wine, beer and spirits, and someone who knows every trail, tide and village in the valley. The flight-inclusive weeks are ATOL-protected.

What is there to do?

As much or as little as you like: walking from the door into the Saja-Besaya reserve, riding on the beach and through the forest, surf on quiet Atlantic beaches, cycling into protected woodland, or an afternoon by the river with a book. The Picos de Europa are about an hour away for a day among the peaks and viewpoints, and the medieval town of Santillana del Mar and the caves of Altamira are half an hour.
